Can You Steam Clean a Car Seat?
A steamer looks like the easy answer for a grimy car seat. Whether it's a good idea depends on your seat, and your manual is where to find out.

Car seats are made from fabric, foam, harness webbing, plastic and metal. Heat and moisture affect materials differently, and manufacturers write their care instructions with their own materials in mind.
What to look for in your manual
- Whether steam, heat or high water temperature is mentioned at all
- Separate instructions for the cover, the harness, the buckle and the shell
- How each part should be dried
If your manual doesn't mention steam
Don't assume it's fine. Contact the manufacturer's customer service with your model number and ask before you use a steamer on any part of the seat.
What to do instead
Follow the cleaning method your manual does list. For most messes, that means removing the cover if it's allowed, vacuuming, cleaning each part the way it describes and letting everything dry fully. Our step-by-step guide to cleaning a car seat walks through it.
