How Do You Get Crumbs Out of a Car Seat?

Snacks in the car are a lifesaver. They're also why your car seat crunches. Here's how to get the crumbs out, including the ones you can't see.

Crumbs and spills packed inside a car seat shell

Most car seats have more crumbs underneath the cover than on top of it. They slip through the seams and the harness slots and collect in the shell.

The quick weekly clean

  1. Unbuckle the harness and lift the straps out of the way.
  2. Shake out loose crumbs, or turn the seat out of the car if you can reinstall it correctly afterwards.
  3. Vacuum with a crevice tool along every seam, the cup holders and around the buckle.
  4. Lift the edges of the pads, if your manual allows, and vacuum underneath.

The deeper clean

If the seat still crunches, the crumbs are under the cover. Taking it off is the only way to reach them, and your manual shows how.

  1. Take photos of the seat and the harness routing first.
  2. Remove the cover the way the manual shows.
  3. Vacuum the shell, then wipe it the way your manual allows.
  4. Clean the cover according to its care instructions.
  5. Reassemble using your photos and the manual.

Crumbs in the buckle

Dried milk and crumbs can build up in the buckle. Your manual says how it can be cleaned. Don't add oils, sprays or lubricants unless it names them.

Keeping it under control

  • Do a quick vacuum once a week, or whenever you clean out the car.
  • Pick snacks that crumble less for car rides.
  • Plan a deeper clean every so often. See how often to clean a car seat.
