Can You Wash Car Seat Straps?
Milk, sunscreen, sticky fingers: the harness straps take a lot. Whether you can wash them, and how, depends on what your seat's manual says.

The harness is the part of the seat that holds your child in, so manufacturers tend to be specific about how it's cleaned. The rules for the straps are often different from the rules for the cover, even on the same seat.
What your manual might say
Look for the harness or strap section in the care instructions. Depending on your seat, it may:
- allow surface cleaning only, with a specific product such as mild soap and water
- say whether the straps can be removed, and how to re-thread them
- tell you not to soak, machine wash or iron the straps
- tell you what to do if a strap is frayed or damaged
Whatever yours says is what to follow, even if a friend's seat or a video online does it differently.
Surface cleaning, step by step
- Check the manual for the product and method it allows.
- Use a cloth with that product and wipe the strap along its length, front and back.
- Let the straps air dry the way the manual describes before the seat is used.
Taking the straps out
If your manual allows the harness to come out, take photos first of how it's routed through the shell and the buckle. Re-thread it exactly as the manual shows. If anything looks wrong afterwards, contact the manufacturer.
What about the buckle?
Crumbs and dried milk love the buckle. Your manual will say how it can be cleaned. Don't add oils, sprays or lubricants unless the manual names them.
